A mobile DVR alarm input is often treated as a simple on/off connection. In practice, a data-sheet entry such as “8 Alarm IN, 2 Alarm OUT and 1 Speaker Port” tells you the connector count—not which signals the interfaces accept, what happens after a trigger or which accessories are needed.

That matters on installation day. A reverse signal might switch the monitor, mark the recording and notify a platform—or do only one of those things. An alarm output might control a warning light without being able to power it. A speaker port may support intercom but not prerecorded alerts.

Here is how vehicle signals, recording rules, local warnings and remote events fit together.

Quick answer: An alarm input receives a vehicle or sensor trigger. An alarm output sends a control signal to external equipment. A speaker output carries audio. They perform different jobs and cannot be used interchangeably.

What Is an Alarm Input on a Mobile DVR?

A mobile DVR alarm input tells the recorder that something has happened elsewhere on the vehicle. It receives an electrical signal or a change in contact state.

Common signal sources include:

  • Reverse gear
  • Left and right turn indicators
  • Door open or closed status
  • Brake signal
  • SOS or panic button
  • External sensor
  • Project-specific equipment status

The input is a trigger, not the action. Firmware settings determine what follows. One project may use the reverse input only to show the rear camera; another may also mark the recording and report the event.

In practical terms, alarm output and speaker output are not interchangeable. An alarm output controls equipment; it does not carry a voice message. A speaker output carries audio; it cannot take the place of a relay output for a warning lamp.

How a Vehicle Trigger Becomes an MDVR Event

A working trigger involves wiring and software settings:

  1. The vehicle or external device produces a signal.
  2. The alarm input detects the required voltage level or contact change.
  3. The MDVR identifies the input as reverse, turn, door, SOS or another assigned event.
  4. It runs the linked recording, display, reporting or warning actions.

On a reversing truck, the reverse-light circuit changes state and the monitor can switch to the rear camera. The recording can be tagged at the same time, while a connected platform receives the time, location and related media where supported.

Common Mobile DVR Alarm Input Applications

Alarm inputs add vehicle context to video: the reviewer can see that a door was open, the vehicle was reversing or the driver pressed SOS.

These are common examples, not guaranteed functions. Display switching requires supporting firmware and correct channel mapping.

High-Level, Low-Level and Dry-Contact Triggers

This is where installations often go wrong. “Alarm 1” does not tell you whether the wire expects positive voltage, ground or a voltage-free contact.

High-level trigger

A high-level input becomes active at a specified positive voltage. A reverse-light feed is a common example, provided it is within the accepted range.

Low-level trigger

A low-level input works in the opposite way: it becomes active when pulled to ground or to the low state defined by the manufacturer.

Dry-contact trigger

A dry contact is an open or closed switch or relay contact that supplies no vehicle voltage. Some inputs read it directly; others need an interface circuit.

There is no universal alarm-input standard across all MDVRs. Before wiring, check:

  • Whether each input uses high-level, low-level or dry-contact triggering
  • The permitted input-voltage range
  • Whether the input and vehicle circuit require a common ground
  • Support for normally open or normally closed contacts
  • Whether the trigger logic can be inverted in the menu
  • Whether an interface relay or signal conditioner is required
  • Whether the vehicle electrical system is 12V or 24V

Wiring safety: Do not apply 12V or 24V directly to an alarm input until you have checked the permitted voltage, pin definition and wiring diagram for the exact unit supplied.

What Happens After an Alarm Input Is Triggered?

Once the MDVR sees the signal, it follows the rule assigned to that input. The most useful actions include:

  • Event marking and protection: Label and protect the relevant footage for easier retrieval.
  • Pre-event and post-event video: Retain context from both sides of the trigger.
  • Camera-view switching: Reverse and turn signals can call up the appropriate rear or side camera on the local monitor.
  • Platform notification: Report the event, time and location, with a snapshot or clip where supported.
  • Local warning: The speaker interface can play supported audio, while the alarm output can control external warning equipment.

Continuous recording does not make the input redundant. The trigger can label or protect the important section, saving hours of manual searching later.

What Is a Mobile DVR Alarm Output Used For?

An alarm output sends the event from the MDVR to an external circuit, such as a warning light, buzzer, relay or controller.

A common mistake is to connect a lamp or siren directly because the port is labelled “Alarm OUT.” It is not necessarily a power supply, and the load may exceed its current limit.

In that case, the MDVR should switch a suitable external relay, while the warning device takes power from a separate fused vehicle circuit:

Match the relay, fuse, wire size and protection to the load. Use the diagram supplied with the ordered harness; never copy another recorder's pinout.

What Does the Speaker Output Actually Support?

Two recorders can share the same SPK label yet support different functions. One may provide intercom, another event prompts, and a third may require a dedicated handset.

Before choosing a speaker, ask:

  • Is the port an amplified speaker output or a line-level audio output?
  • Which active speaker, passive speaker or handset is compatible?
  • What impedance and power rating does it require?
  • Can it play editable event prompts?
  • Does the firmware and platform support remote two-way communication?
  • Does intercom need a microphone, and can audio be linked to events?

The K6108 8-channel MDVR and K6204 4-channel MDVR both list an SPK interface. The speaker or handset and its available functions still need to match the hardware, firmware and platform.

Can AI Events Trigger the Speaker or Alarm Output?

Not every event begins with a physical input wire. In an AI MDVR system, ADAS, DMS, BSD or pedestrian-detection software can generate the event internally.

The system can then save footage, warn the driver, report to the platform or activate an external device. Those actions do not automatically come with AI: licensing, audio, reporting and output linkage must be included in the project configuration.

What Should Buyers Confirm Before Ordering?

Do not stop at “8 Alarm IN / 2 Alarm OUT” on the quotation. Before approving the system, ask the supplier:

  1. How many alarm inputs and outputs are available on the exact model?
  2. Does each input support high-level, low-level or dry-contact triggering?
  3. What input-voltage range is permitted?
  4. Can each input be renamed and mapped to a specific vehicle signal?
  5. Which recording, display, upload and local-warning actions can each trigger activate?
  6. Are pre-event and post-event recordings supported?
  7. Can events, snapshots or video clips be uploaded through 4G?
  8. What type of alarm output is used, and what is its maximum load?
  9. Is an external relay required for the intended warning device?
  10. Is the speaker port amplified, and which speaker or handset is compatible?

Also ask for the final diagram, pinout, cable-colour definition, trigger-voltage specification, menu screenshots, linkage table and speaker requirements. For a connected system, request a live platform-event demonstration.

How to Test Alarm Inputs and Speaker Output

Do not sign off after seeing an input icon change. Follow the signal from the vehicle to its final action:

  1. Confirm the vehicle voltage, ground reference and trigger type.
  2. Test reverse, left turn, right turn, door and SOS signals one at a time.
  3. Check the corresponding I/O status in the MDVR menu or diagnostic screen.
  4. Confirm that the correct event name and time appear in the recording.
  5. Review pre-event and post-event footage where applicable.
  6. Verify that the local monitor switches to the correct camera and returns as expected.
  7. Check that the speaker plays the correct sound at a usable volume.
  8. Confirm that the alarm output controls the relay or warning device correctly.
  9. Verify the event name, location, image or video received by the platform.
  10. Disconnect 4G, repeat the local test and check what happens to pending events after the connection returns.

Test on the vehicle, not only on the bench. Voltage behaviour and electrical noise vary, so a mixed fleet may need more than one approved wiring method.
