That matters when comparing quotations. The recorder may include a 4G module, while the project still needs a SIM card, antennas, a compatible CMS platform, firmware settings and a suitable data plan.

This guide explains local storage, 4G transmission, outage behavior and what buyers should confirm before ordering.

Quick answer: A practical fleet setup usually combines continuous local recording, on-demand live view and event-based upload. Continuous cloud recording is a separate requirement and should be confirmed before quotation.

What Is a 4G Mobile DVR?

A mobile DVR, often called an MDVR, records multiple vehicle cameras. A 4G-enabled model adds cellular communication so the recorder can exchange selected data with a compatible fleet platform.

The 4G module is the communication channel, not the complete remote monitoring solution. Platform access, hosting, SIM service and feature support still need to be confirmed.

What Components Does the System Need?

A complete setup includes:

  1. Vehicle cameras
  2. A 4G-enabled mobile DVR
  3. An HDD, SSD, TF card or SD card supported by the recorder
  4. A SIM card with an active mobile data plan
  5. A compatible 4G antenna
  6. A positioning module and GPS/BD/GLONASS antenna where needed
  7. Coverage from a suitable cellular network
  8. A compatible CMS server or hosted fleet platform
  9. Web, PC or mobile user access
  10. Optional alarm inputs, vehicle sensors, SOS buttons or AI cameras

“Supports 4G” does not mean the SIM, data plan, platform license, hosting and antennas are included. Ask for a complete bill of materials and recurring service fees.

How Does a 4G Mobile DVR Connect a Vehicle to the Platform?

1. Cameras capture the vehicle video

Front, side, rear, driver-facing or cargo-area cameras send video to the recorder. Channel count and resolution depend on the selected MDVR.

2. The MDVR encodes and stores the video

The recorder compresses video using H.264 or H.265, depending on the model and settings, and saves the main recording to the vehicle’s HDD, SSD or memory card. In most projects, local storage remains the main evidence source.

3. The device registers with the server

After startup, the MDVR connects to the mobile network and registers with its server. The user normally signs in to the CMS rather than connecting directly through the SIM card’s IP address.

4. Position and device status are reported

Depending on the system, the MDVR may report position, speed, direction, ignition status, alarms, camera status and storage status.

5. The platform requests video when needed

When a manager opens a camera channel, the platform requests the selected stream over 4G. Closing the channel normally ends that live-video session.

6. Configured events may upload automatically

An SOS input, vehicle signal or AI event can trigger an upload. The record may include event type, time, GPS position, snapshot or short clip, depending on the recorder, firmware and platform.

Continuous upload of every camera consumes substantial mobile data and server storage. It can also create gaps during poor coverage and add privacy or retention requirements. For many fleets, the practical model is:

Continuous local recording + on-demand live view + event-based upload

If continuous server-side recording is required, state the channel count, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, daily operating hours and retention period at the quotation stage.

Live View, Remote Playback and Event Upload Are Different Functions

Main Stream vs Sub-Stream for Remote Monitoring

Most connected video systems use a higher-quality main stream for local recording and a lighter sub-stream for remote preview.

The sub-stream may use a lower resolution, frame rate or bitrate to keep mobile viewing responsive. Official documentation also separates higher-quality main streams from lower-bandwidth sub-streams (Hikvision stream guidance).

“4CH 1080P recording” therefore does not guarantee four simultaneous 1080P streams on a phone. Remote quality also depends on channel count, upload speed, coverage, bitrate and platform capacity.

How Much Mobile Data Does Remote Video Use?

A quick planning estimate is:

These are 30-day estimates. Protocol overhead, variable bitrate, event uploads, playback and downloads can change the result.

Base the data plan on viewing behavior, not only fleet size. One alarm-check channel uses far less data than several live channels kept open all day.

What Happens When the 4G Signal Is Lost?

If the MDVR remains powered and storage is healthy, local recording will usually continue during a cellular outage. The GPS receiver may still calculate position, but the remote connection stops:

  • Live view becomes unavailable.
  • The platform may show the vehicle as offline.
  • Live GPS reporting pauses.
  • Real-time event delivery may fail or be delayed.

Do not assume everything will be backfilled automatically. Confirm whether the system caches missed alarms, GPS history, snapshots or clips, the cache limit and reconnection behavior.

4G vs GPS vs WiFi in a Mobile DVR System

GPS can determine location without 4G, but it cannot report live without a communication path. 4G can send data, but it cannot create location data without a positioning module.

WiFi is not a substitute for 4G road coverage. It may support nearby access or depot download where configured.

Does Any 4G MDVR Work with Any Fleet Platform?

No. The recorder’s protocol, firmware, server settings, authentication method and platform features must match.

Before committing to a platform, confirm clients, vehicle and user limits, concurrent live channels, playback, downloads, event media, permissions, API availability, license model, server location, retention and update responsibility.

SIM Card, APN and Regional Network Requirements

“4G supported” is not enough for an international fleet project. A unit for one market may not support the LTE bands used in another.

Before ordering, provide:

  • Destination country and mobile operator
  • Required LTE frequency bands
  • SIM size and expected monthly data allowance
  • APN settings
  • Public SIM, private APN, VPN or fixed-IP requirements
  • Roaming requirements
  • Typical operating regions and known coverage limitations

Test the SIM after installation. Antenna position, metal bodywork, operating routes and carrier congestion can affect performance even when the bands are correct.

  1. An SOS button, vehicle input or AI algorithm creates an event.
  2. The MDVR marks and stores the relevant pre-event and post-event footage where configured.
  3. The device associates the event with time and GPS position.

  • AI safety fleets: ADAS, DMS or BSD event records, snapshots, clips and driver coaching review.

In many cases, the daily workflow is continuous GPS and event monitoring, with live video opened only when a manager needs to verify a situation.

The K6108 series is a conventional recorder and does not support AI algorithms. If the project requires ADAS, DMS or other AI events, use a suitable AI MDVR configuration and confirm the required cameras, algorithm licenses and platform functions. Available remote features still depend on the selected CMS, SIM card, network, firmware and setup.
